Salts from Italy

The Salt Road in Sicily

windmills on the Via del Sale in SicilyFor hundreds of years, salt has been harvested from salt pans along la Via del Sale (the Salt Road) which stretches along the northwestern tip of Sicily from Trapani to Marsala.

The route is dotted with quaint Dutch-style windmills used to extract the sea water and grind the pure white salt. Read [xx link] more about The Salt Road ...

Trapani's taste is quite delicate, almost sweet on the tongue. Best used as a finishing salt for gourmet dishes, Trapani Sicilian Sea Salt makes a lovely change from your usual table salt.

The Taste of Italy

There are so many flavoured salts in our Fusion range that incorporate the flavours we associate so often with Italian cuisine.

Garlic, Sun-ripened tomatoes, Balsamic Vinegar

pizza margherita

These marry well with typical Italian foods such as pasta, risotto, pizza and slow-cooked meats. Try:

  • Roasted Garlic Sea Salt on simple Spaghetti Aglio e Olio (Garlic and Oil), and add chilli, parsley and a good Parmesan cheese

  • Sun Ripened Tomato Sea Salt sprinkled on Pizza Margherita for added depth

  • Aged Balsamic Sea Salt adds the sweet sharpness of aged Modena balsamic vinegar to roasted cherry tomatoes, served atop baked fish

Truffles and porcini mushrooms

Some of the most sought-after truffles in the world are grown and hand-harvested in Italy.

  • Both our Black Truffle Sea Salt and White Truffle Sea Salt use genuine Italian truffle pieces to impart their rich, earthy flavours
  • See our website for a recipe for Porcini Butter to dress up your steak

Coffee!

espresso martiniThink of Italians and you'll often think of them drinking the ubiquitous espresso. Be brave and experiment with the unusual Espresso Brava Sea Salt :

  • It can be used with desserts (try adding to the poaching liquid for pears, along with vanilla, cinnamon and star anise; or sprinkle on an affogato),
  • Add to cocktails (rim your glasses with melted chocolate and Espresso Brava salt to embellish an espresso martini),
  • It can even be used in rubs and marinades on meats. Coffee and venison is a well-known combination.
