Everywhere you look, there's a new, cutting-edge skincare treatment hitting the market. Would you guess that one of the most effective ones originates not in modern spas but in ancient medicine?

Healing clays have been used for thousands of years to treat aches and pains, draw impurities from the skin and promote general health. One of the most prominent ones, bentonite clay, is quickly becoming a household staple, and for good reason.

While this kind of clay offers many internal and external health benefits, today we're zeroing in on its use as a superstar facial ingredient.

Interested in concocting your own bentonite clay mask? Read on to discover a few different variations that can work for your specific skin type. Ready, set, let's glow!

Why Use a Bentonite Clay Mask?

Bentonite clay is primarily derived from aged volcanic emissions that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago, including tuff or ash. When these glassy deposits combine with water beneath the seabed, they turn into clay over time. In fact, most of the deposits accessed today date from the Tertiary and Mesozoic periods. That's up to 230 million years ago!

While most people simply refer to the substance as "bentonite clay", it's important to note that there are actually two different kinds:

  • Sodium Bentonite
  • Calcium Bentonite

Calcium bentonite is more of a mainstream beauty ingredient, made popular by the Aztec Bentonite Clay Detox that's become a drugstore staple. However, though this clay still contains beneficial properties, it doesn't have the drawing power that sodium bentonite features.

The latter has a higher colloidal value, allowing it to absorb and remove toxins from your skin. Food grade bentonite clay can also be digested as a detoxing tonic!

Over time, our complexions become dulled and our pores congested by impurities including oil production, bacteria, dead skin cells, and environmental triggers. Sodium bentonite can draw all of that gunk out naturally, revealing smoother and clearer skin in just one application.

That's why all of the masks we're sharing feature our 100% pure, natural Australian Sodium Bentonite Clay! From sensitive to acne-prone, let's discover the exact blends that will benefit your skin the most.

Normal Skin

Your skin's not too oily, too dry, or too sensitive. This means you can get a little more creative with your clay mask! Want to keep your complexion radiant and balanced?

Try mixing your bentonite clay with everyone's go-to super-drink: green tea.

On its own, green tea contains polyphenols and six different types of catechins, all featuring powerful antioxidants that ward off free radicals. Applied topically, its anti-inflammatory properties can also help combat redness, reduce inflammation and calm skin irritation.

To make this mask, brew one cup of green tea. Then, spoon out enough to create a mixture of three parts liquid to one part clay. Massage into your skin, and sip the rest of your tea while it dries for 15 to 20 minutes.

Oily Skin

If you struggle with oily skin, you've likely tried everything mattifying product under the sun. What if we told you the answer might lie right inside your pantry?

One of the most popular ways to use bentonite clay is to combine it with apple cider vinegar. This is an especially effective method for those with excessive sebum production. The clay's natural antibacterial properties help absorb this oily substance, which can sit on your skin and lead to breakouts.

Another antibacterial powerhouse, apple cider vinegar ups the ante and makes this mask even stronger! It's also chocked full of natural alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), which work to slough off dead skin cells. For this reason, you'll find AHAs listed as key ingredients in some of today's fanciest retexturizing serums!

Using the same method, mix three parts vinegar to one part clay and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before gently rinsing off.

Dry Skin

Does your skin always feel like you're in the middle of the Sahara Desert? A dry complexion can make makeup application a challenge. Not to mention, it's also painful and irritating.

A healing bentonite clay mask can help restore your skin's natural moisture levels and leave it softer than ever before. While it's beneficial all on its own, you can help add even more luminosity when you mix it with an ultra-hydrating oil, such as jojoba oil or rosehip seed oil. These oils are non-comedogenic, which means they'll do their job without clogging your pores.

The former is especially moisturizing because, despite its name, jojoba oil is actually a wax ester derived from pressed jojoba seeds. In this way, it mimics your skin's sebum production. When used as a carrier oil, it can draw ingredients more deeply into your skin.

Instead of mixing cups of oil with your clay and totally draining your product, you'll take a slightly different approach this time. Sprinkle a little clay in your hand and add enough oil to form a paste. A little goes a long way, so start with a few drops.

Sensitive Skin

Those with sensitive skin have to exercise extra caution when trying new skincare products. Most mainstream options contain harsh chemicals that can trigger breakouts and lead to redness.

Fortunately, bentonite clay is meant to soothe your skin, not stress it out.

We've created a calming Bentonite and Honey Face Mask recipe designed just for you! To make it at home, mix one teaspoon of bentonite clay and one teaspoon of raw honey in a non-metal bowl using a non-metal spoon. Slowly add in one-fourth teaspoon of apple cider vinegar until you reach the right consistency.

You can even add in a few drops of lavender essential oil at the end to enhance the effects!
